Rollins Win Streak Halted At Saint Leo

There was a time when the Rollins College Tars could just show up at a gym and they would defeat the Saint Leo Lions, or so it seemed. As evidenced by the 28 game win streak the Tars had over the Lions at the turn of the century. This season that has not been the case. In the first meeting in Winter Park Rollins needed some late game heroics from John Latimer to secure a two point win. On. Wednesday night they were not as fortunate as they fell 80-65 at the Mario Bowman Activities Center on the campus of Saint Leo. Rollins falls to 15-9 and 8-7 in the SSC as they see a four game win streak snapped, while Saint Leo improves to 10-14 and 5-11 in the SSC.

Rollins would score the first five points of the  game and led 18-9 after a put back by Ian Hart at the 11:21 mark of the first half. The next seven points would go to the home standing Lions. A jumper by Beau Frericks with 8:31 left until halftime gave the Tars a 21-16 lead. Saint Leo would score the next seven points before an Emillis Butkus triple put the Tars back on top 24-23 with 6:27 left in the half. The next six points would then go to Saint Leo. Rollins would later get a three by Frericks to cut the Lions lead to a pair (33-31) with 3:04 until halftime. The Lions would score the final seven points of the half, as they would have the all momentum going into the locker room after Eric Jones hit a jumper with six seconds left in the half. Rollins shot 48 percent in the opening half, 45.5 percent (5-11) from the 3-point line, and 50 percent (2-4) from the free throw line in the opening stanza. Saint Leo shot 56.7 percent from the field, 27.3 percent (3-11) from the 3-point line, and 25 percent (1-4) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes.

Both teams came out ice cold to start the second half. The first four points went to Saint Leo but Rollins would answer with a 10-0 burst as a Frericks 3-pointer made it 42-41 in favor of the home team. Brady Corso would hit a triple and the lead was again four. Rollins would take the lead 48-47 as Butkus scored after an offensive rebound by Michael Kalina. Corso would again hit a 3-ball to put the Lions on top. Rollins would knot the game at 50 on a Kalina hoop. Corso and Niemann traded triples as the game was tied at 53 with 10:20 to go. Saint Leo would regain the lead on a Jaylan McElroy basket 16 seconds later. That would be the start of a 16-0 run by the Lions as Rollins would not score another point until Frericks made a layup at the 4:03 mark. Corso would cap the run with another triple. Saint Leo would coast to victory after that. Saint Leo was paced by Corso who knocked down six triples on his way to 23 points, Tae Wilson added 18, Amar Hot chipped in 13, McElroy tallied 12, and Eric Jones netted 10. As a team the Lions shot 50.8 percent from the floor, 34.8 percent (8-23) from the 3-point line, and 57.1 percent (8-14) from the free throw line. The Lions dominated the paint with a 40-26 advantage and led in fast break points 20-4. They edged the Tars on the boards 35-34. Saint Leo had 18 assists and just four turnovers in the contest.

Rollins was paced by Frericks who had 21, Butkus notched 19 to go along with nine rebounds, and Grishaev tallied 12 to go with nine boards as well as three blocked shots. Rollins shot 43.9 percent from the field, 36 percent (9-25) from the 3-point line, and 66.7 percent (6-9) at the free throw line. The Tars had 16 assists and 12 turnovers in the contest. Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they head to Boca Raton to take on Lynn. Tip time is set for 4 PM.
