Senior Sendoff. Rollins Takes On Florida Southern In Pivotal SSC Contest Wednesday
The Rollins College Tars (16-11 9-9 SSC) will celebrate senior day Wednesday (2/26) and will also play in a pivotal SSC matchup with the Florida Southern Moccacasins (21-7 12-6 SSC) at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center. Rollins comes into the contest tied with Palm Beach Atlantic for sixth place in the SSC (both teams have two conference games remaining,) while they trail Tampa by .5 game (Spartans have one game remaining.) The Tars are coming off a tough 90-87 loss on the road to Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday that came down to the games final minute. John Latimer and Emillis Butkus each tallied 21 points to pace the Tars, Sergey Grishaev added 14, and Michael Niemann added 13 off the Rollins bench. Rollins shot 49.2 percent from the field, 53.8 percent (14-26) from the 3-point line, and 78.6 percent (11-14) at the free throw line. In the first meeting with the Mocs in January (Rollins fell 98-82) Grishaev had a career high 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while Beau Frericks and Butkus each scored 19. Rollins shot 50 percent in that one, 29.2 percent (7-24) from the 3-point line, and 69.2 percent (9-13) from the free throw line. Rollins scores 83.8 points per game which is sixth in the SSC while they give up an SSC fifth best 79.5 points per night. The Tars are second in the conference shooting 48.9 percent from the floor, shoot 38.2 percent from three which leads the conference, and convert on 75.1 percent of there free throws which is third in the SSC. Rollins is seventh in the conference in rebounding as they corral 0.9 (36.9-36.0) more rebounds than the opposition. Rollins is ninth in turnover margin (-1.22) and fourth in assist to turnover ratio (1.45.) They also dis out 16.67 assists per game which is fifth in the SSC. They are tied for second in the conference in field goal percentage against (43.1) and sixth at guarding the 3-point line (34.1 percent.) They block 3.15 shots per game (seventh SSC) and get 6.22 steals per game (ninth SSC.) Butkus leads the team and is seventh in the SSC averaging 18.3 points per game, he is joined in double figures by Frericks (16.6 points per night,) Grishaev (15.3 per contest) and Latimer (15.2 per game.) Grishaev pulls down an SSC ninth best 7.1 rebounds per game, while Butkus (53.4 percent) and Frericks (50 percent) from the field are sixth and eighth respectively in the SSC in that category. Frericks is third in 3-point percentage in the league (41.9 percent) while Latimer (87.1 percent for second in SSC) and Frericks (85.4 percent) which is sixth in the SSC from the free throw line. Butkus is 10th in threes made per game (2.2) while Frericks is eighth in assists per game in the SSC (3.8) with Latimer ranked 10th in the league (3.3 assists per night.) Frerikcs is also ninth in assist to turnover ratio in the conference (1.8.) Grishav swats a team leading and SSC sixth best 1.4 shots per game while Latimer leads the team getting 1.5 steals per night. Frericks plays 33.3 minutes per game which is fifth in the SSC as well.
The Mocs are tied with Lynn for second in the SSC as Embry-Riddle sits one game in the final week of the regular season. Last time out the Mocs were a 108-83 winner over Saint Leo. Peyton Gerald led the Mocs with 32, Alex Steen netted 21, and Jadin Booth scored 20. The Mocs shot 47.3 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent (12-28) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (8-10) at the free throw line in the win. In the win over Rollins in January Steen had 21, Gerald added 15, Dominick Denny had 14, and Booth tallied 13. FSC shot 50.6 percent from the field, 37.9 percent (11-29) from the 3-point line, and 64.3 percent (9-14) at the free throw line in that one. The Mocs are second in the SSC as they put up 94 points per game while they allow 85.5 per night which is 10th in the SSC. They shoot an SSC third best 47 percent from the field, and are also third in 3-point percentage (36.3 percent.) The Mocs lead the conference in free throw percentage (78.7 percent.) On the glass they are eighth as they are being out rebounded by 0.6 (41.5-42.1) rebounds per game. They are fourth in turnover margin (3.18) and third in assist to turnover ratio (1.57.) The Mocs are fourth in opponent field goal percentage (43.7) as well as fourth at guarding the 3-point line (33.8 percent.) They lead the conference by more than two blocks per game (7.29, Saint Leo is second at 5.23.) They dish out 18.68 assists per game which is third in the SSC, and get 9.39 steals per contest which is third in the SSC. Booth leads the team and is third in the SSC scoring 20.6 per night while Steen is fifth at 19.1 per game. Peyton (14.4 per game) and Denny (11.7 per contest) also average double figures. Steen has been a monster on the glass this year as he is second in the SSC grabbing 10.1 rebounds per game. He also shoots 57 percent from the field which is third in the SSC. Booth leads the conference shooting at a 92.1 percent clip from the free throw line as well. Booth is also fourth in the SSC in triples made per game (2.8) as well as dishing out an SSC second best 5.8 assists per contest. Steen blocks 2.7 shots per game which leads the SSC, while Booth and Denny are both getting 1.9 steals per game. Booth plays 36.5 minutes per game which only trails Donovan Brown from Florida Tech who plays 37.2 minutes per night.
