SSC Quarterfinals Get Underway As Rollins Battles Florida Southern In Lakeland

 The Sunshine State Conference Quarterfinals get underway tomorrow (Tuesday 3.4) as the seventh seeded Rollins College Tars (16-13 9-11 SSC) take on the second seeded Mocs of Florida Southern (23-7 14-6 SSC) for the third time this season.   Rollins lost three straight to close the regular season, the most recent being a 75-71 loss to #2 Nova Southeastern on the road Saturday. Sergey Grishaev scored 15 points, John Latimer added 10, and Michael Niemann knocked down three triples to score nine in his first start of the campaign. Rollins shot 47.3 percent from the field, 40 percent (12-30) from the 3-point line, and 58.3 percent (7-12) from the free throw line in the loss. 

 In the first meeting with Florida Southern on 1.22 in Lakeland Rollins fell 98-82. Grishaev had a career high 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in that loss. The Tars also got 19 points each from Beau Frericks and Emillis Butkus in that one. Rollins shot 50 percent from the field but managed to hit just 29.2 percent (7-24) of there shots from the 3-point line, they shot 69.2 percent (9-13) from the free throw line. In the most recent meeting with the Mocs which was just on Wednesday it was a 93-79 Mocs win that spoiled the Tars senior night. Frericks had 22 and Grishaev 18 in what would be the last time they would play in Warden Arena as college athletes. Butkus also scored 15 in that contest. Rollins shot 46.9 percent from the field, 30.4 percent (7-23) from the 3-point line, and 85.7 percent (12-14) from the free throw line in that contest. 

 Rollins scores an SSC sixth best 83.2 points per game on the season while they give up 79.8 points per contest which is good for fourth in the conference. Rollins has shot the ball well much of the season as evidenced by the fact they shot 48.7 percent from the field which is second in the SSC, they lead the SSC in 3-point percentage (38 percent) in the regular season and they shot free throws at 75 percent which is third in the SSC. On the glass the Tars are seventh as they pull down one more (36.8-35.8) rebound than the opposition. Rollins is ninth in turnover margin (-1.62) and fifth in assist to turnover ratio (1.40.) They dish out an SSC fifth best 16.52 assists per game as well. Rollins is third in field goal percentage against (43.5 percent) as well as third in the conference at guarding the 3-point line (33.9 percent.) The Tars block 3.03 shots per game which is seventh in the league and steal the ball 6.28 times per contest which is ninth in the SSC. Butkus leads the team and is eighth in the conference scoring 17.8 points per game, he is joined in double figures by Frericks (16.4 points per contest,) Grishaev (15.4 per game) and Latimer (14.7 points per night.) On the glass Grishaev pulls down an SSC 10th best 6.9 rebounds per game. Butkus is sixth in the SSC in field goal percentage at 52.4 percent while Frericks shoots field goals at an SSC seventh best 50.3 percent, knocks down triples at an SSC second best 42 percent clip, and the Cary,Illinois native shoots free throws at an SSC fourth best 86 percent. Frericks also dishes out an SSC seventh best 3.8 assists per game, and is sixth in the SSC in minutes played at 32.9 per night. Latimer shoots free throws at 87.4 percent which is second in the SSC and is 10th in assists per game at 3.2. Frericks is eighth in assists to turnover ratio in the league at 1.8, while Grishaev blocks 1.4 shots per game which is sixth in the SSC.  

 The Mocs are coming off of a 77-74 win over Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday. Jadin Booth scored 32 to lead the Mocs, Alex Steen added 16 to go along with a game high 20 rebounds, and Joe Moon tallied 13. The Mocs shot 41.7 percent from the field, 36.8 percent (7-19) from the 3-point line, and 74.1 percent (20-27) from the free throw line. In the first meeting with the Tars Steen led the way with 21, Peyton Gerald had 15, Dominick Denny netted 14, and Booth scored 13. FSC shot 50.6 percent from the field, 37.9 percent (11-29) from the 3-point line, and 64.3 percent (9-14) from the free throw line in the win. In the meeting on Wednesday Steen paced the Mocs with 21 points and 11 rebounds, Gerald had 18, Denny tallied 16, and Booth contributed 15. The Mocs shot 50 percent from the field, 34.8 percent (8-23) from the 3-point line, and 86.4 percent (19-22) from the free throw line. On the season the Mocs high powered offense scores an SSC second best 93.4 points per game while they give up an SSC 10th best 84.9 points per contest. They shoot an SSC third best 47 percent from the field, 36.3 percent from three which is fifth in the conference, and an SSC leading 77.8 percent from the free throw line. The Mocs are eighth in the SSC as they are being beaten on the glass by 0.3 (41.4-41.7) rebounds per night. They are fourth in turnover margin (3.00 per game) and third in assist to turnover ratio (1.57.) The Mocs dish out 18.7 assists per game which is fourth in the league as well. They are fourth in opponent field goal percentage (43.7 percent) and second at guarding the 3-point line (33.7 percent.) The Mocs also block  7.17 shots per game which is tops in the league. Booth leads the team scoring an SSC second best 20.8 points per game, Steen puts up an SSC fifth best  19 per night, Gerald nets 14.3 points per contest, and Denny gets 11.6 per game. Steen also leads the team and is second in the SSC pulling down 10.5 rebounds per contest. Gerald shoots 53.3 percent from the field which is fifth in the SSC while Booth shoots triples at 38.2 percent which is ninth in the SSC. Booth is fourth in the conference in triples per game at 2.8 per night and leads the SSC in free throw percentage (92.9 percent.) Booth is also second in the conference in assists per game (5.7) and fourth in assist to turnover ratio in the league (2.5.) Steen (2.6 blocks per game) and Gerald (2.1 blocks per night)  are the top shot blockers in the conference as well. Booth steals the ball an SSC sixth  best 1.9 times per game. Booth is also second in the conference in minutes played at 36.7 per contest.
