SSC Secures Four Bids To South Regional

 The Sunshine State Conference is well represented in the NCAA South Region of the NCAA DII Men's Basketball Tournament. Nova Southeastern, Florida Southern, Lynn, and Tampa secured bids to the regional announced on Sunday's selection show on NCAA.com 

 Nova Southeastern won for the 81st straight time at home on Sunday to secure a fourth straight title. The Sharks knocked off Florida Southern 103-89 in Sunday's championship game at Rick Case Arena. The Sharks will be the top seed and host the region. They will take on eight seed Savannah State in the opening round. The Florida Southern Mocs will be the third seed and take on #6 Montevallo. Lynn secured the fifth seed after falling 88-83 to Florida Southern in the SSC Semifinals. The Fighting Knights will battle fourth seeded Valdosta State Saturday. Tampa was the final SSC team to secure a region bid as they came in as the seven seed after falling 104-80 to NSU in the SSC semis. The Spartans will take on second seeded Alabama-Hutsville on Saturday.

Rollins Knocks Off Barry.

 The Rollins College Tars went down to Miami Shores and picked up their first conference win of the season as they knocked off Barry 86-79. With the win Rollins improves to 4-4 and 1-2 in the SSC. Barry falls to 3-3 and 1-2 in the SSC.   Kyle Marion paced the Tars with 18 points, Matheus Silviera netted 17 and grabbed nine rebounds, John Latimer knocked down three 3-pointer on his way to 16 points, while Hutton Yenor tallied 14. Rollins shot 55.8 percent from the field, 57.1 percent (8-14) from the 3-point line, 74 percent (20-27) from the free throw line.  Nick Anderson led Barry with 29, Malik Stanley scored 12, and both Jason Williams and Rusty Moorer scored 10. Tars Set To Battle Eckerd Wednesday.

 The Rollins College Tars return home to face the Eckerd College Tritons on Wednesday at Warden Arena. You can catch all the action on RollinsSports.com and on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park with Jim "Shooter"Ferro and Robert Siegel on the call.   Rollins (8-9 3-6 SSC) is coming off a 90-83 overtime win at Saint Leo on Saturday. The Tars were led by 28 points from Hutton Yenor, Kyle Marion added 25, Cade Long tallied 13, and Dayton Gumm scored 11. They shot 59 percent from the field and 33 percent (6-18) from the 3-point line in the contest. They also shot at a 70 percent clip (14-20) from the free throw line. Marion, Silveira, Barnhizer combine for 51 in Road Loss To Florida Tech.

 Rollins College got a combined 51 points from the trio of Matheus Silveira, Kyle Marion, and Braxton Barnhizer but it was not nearly enough in a 96-73 road loss to Florida Tech at the Charles & Ruth Clemente Center. With the loss Rollins drops to 3-3 (0-1 SSC.) The Panthers improve to a perfect 6-0 on the season.   Barnhizer hit a pair of 3-pointer's in the games first 1:47 and the Tars led 6-1. Chase Thompson and Rashaan Edwards hit triples of their own to put the Panthers up 7-6. Barnhizer's third straight triple gave Rollins a 9-7 lead at the 16:55 mark of the first half. The lead was short-lived as a 3-pointer and a layup by Thompson put FIT ahead by a score of 12-9. Silveira and McCullough traded dunks before a Silveira jumper trimmed the Panthers lead to one (14-13) five minutes into this one.
